Our first Freimann program of 2012 begins with a light, jazz-flavored work by Douglass Hill, bringing together the unique combination of horn, clarinet, bass and vibraphone. Ligeti's Six Batelles for woodwind quintet is a work that conceals its rather formidable avant-garde nature in witty, thoroughly enjoyable music. We end with the string quartet Intimate Letters, in which Janacek poured out his feelings for the young woman who was his muse.
The Freimann Series offers intimacy and an up-close look as we present chamber ensemble pieces that highlight each instrument. Performed in small groups, the ensembles feature the talented members of The Phil playing diverse and engaging music.
